About Barry

Barry Golten works with self-esteem, anxiety, stress, addictions and relationship and family concerns using approaches he has practised for many years. He is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and has ten years' experience in counselling roles and related work.

He began training as an integrative counsellor in the late 1990s and spent many years working in the charity sector. That work included roles as a support worker and nearly two decades as a manager, where he used and refined his counselling skills in everyday practice.

In 2012 he qualified in Solution Focused Brief Therapy and has offered therapy, coaching and training using that model. He has since combined solution-focused work with person-centred and psychodynamic ideas to shape his current practice.

More recently he has delivered training in trauma, attachment and resilience and works as a trainer and consultant for KCA Training. His practice draws on Internal Family Systems alongside his other approaches to help people understand and work with different parts of themselves.

Sessions are presented as regular meetings in which the counsellor listens, reflects and helps clients identify practical steps. He works with a wide range of concerns including grief, ADHD, compassion fatigue, anger, career matters, intimacy issues and non-monogamous relationship dynamics.

How his approaches are used in online counselling

Internal Family Systems (IFS) looks at different parts of a person and how they interact; work with IFS helps people notice and relate differently to inner parts that drive emotions and behaviour. Solution Focused Brief Therapy concentrates on small, practical steps and what is already working; it can be useful for coping with life changes, career issues and fixing specific problems.

Finding the right approach is part of the work. The counsellor will discuss options and agree a way of working with the client based on their needs, goals and preferences. This is a collaborative process where methods can be adjusted as therapy progresses.

The biography does not specify session formats, so please confirm current options before booking. Online sessions can make it easier to fit counselling into a busy week, reduce travel time and allow shorter check-ins when needed. They can also suit people who prefer not to be on camera or who need a quieter setting during a break from work.
